Whether you are moving locally or long distance you will need to pack your things properly and securely. You’ll want to make sure your things get to their destination in one piece. However, as in many things, so too with moving, we are only as good as our tools and supplies. In order to make your move as stress-free and easy as possible, we made a list of must-have relocation supplies which will guarantee you’re prepared for your moving day. All you need to do is get packing.
Must have relocation supplies
Boxes
Don’t laugh. We know it’s obvious but sometimes in a rush people tend to forget things. We would never suggest that you would completely forget the boxes, just that sometimes people forget to bring enough. Make sure you double up on moving boxes Jersey city and get some special boxes if you can. Special boxes can be reinforced or shaped specifically for some item you want to put in them. Don’t be afraid if you have more boxes than things. You can always recycle them later or use them to put your things in storage if you need the extra space.
Packing materials
Bubble wrap, packing peanuts, rags of cloth or just plain old paper to wrap your things. This is another essential tool. As with the boxes, you can feel free to get more packing materials than you’ll need for your move. You can use the extra wrap to reinforce that painting your mom got you when you graduated. Even if you have more of these relocation supplies than you need, it won’t be a problem. They are all recyclable and can be repurposed in a variety of ways.
Tape
Any kind would do, but it’s best to have more than one type of tape. You’ll want a heavy duty one to secure and proof your boxes. Also, adhesive tape will be used in almost every single part of your move. Make sure you have lots of it and that it’s a good tape.
Types of tape you can use as your relocation supplies:
- duct tape
- shipping tape
- masking tape for labeling
- painter’s tape
All of these will work, but having two or three kinds gives you the ability to adapt on the fly during your moving day. And remember that old saying: “If duct tape doesn’t fix it, you’re not using enough duct tape”.
Rope
Rope can prove very useful both when you are packing and on your moving day. You can use it to tie things down on the spot or to secure your boxes in the moving truck to prevent them from moving about. It’s usually good to always have rope lying around, especially on your moving day.
Marking pens
Sharpies, magic markers or any pen that works reliably. An important but often neglected part of packing is labeling the boxes. That’s why you need a marker. If you want, you can get different colored pens for different rooms. This will make your unpacking even easier. If you are not into markers or don’t have them at all, you can use pieces of paper and duct tape them to the boxes.
Refreshments
Not really supplies but still important. They will not only motivate your movers to work better and faster, but will also give you a chance to take a break from time to time and relieve all the pressure building up inside every human on moving day.
First Aid Kit
Always have a first aid kit with you when moving your home. The movers will be carrying your heavy furniture all day, and you will be handling shard scissors and box cutters. You never know what might happen, but you can make sure you are ready in case of an injury. Having a first aid kit doesn’t mean you can be careless now. It’s there just for the worst case scenario.
Relocation supplies: Tools
Box cutter
Proper Jersey City Movers will bring their own, of course, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. A box cutter will be useful to you in the days after the actual moving day. You can take your time and unpack at a leisurely pace. You can decide to take a week unpacking!
PROTIP: Using a key or a regular knife can damage your belongings in the box. Make sure you know what you’re doing and that you are careful when handling sharp objects.
Scissors
During the move used for basically the same things as the box cutter. You will make your choice depending on which one you prefer to use, but it is best to have both, especially if there is someone helping you open the boxes. And even though they have a similar function during your moving day, these relocation supplies are not the same in every way.
Protective gloves
And we are not talking about surgeon’s gloves. You need heavy duty protection for your hand. You never know what can happen in the chaos of the moving day, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Measuring tape
This is the kind of tape that you only need one of. Your movers will be able to provide one on a moving day, but we suggest you get one for yourself before that. You’ll definitely need it someday, it’s something every household should have.
Other relocation supplies you might find useful
As we mentioned before, moving day is chaotic, so here are some more items you may use:
- a charger
- extra blankets
- an extra change of clothing
- toiletries (toothbrush, soap…)
- toilet paper (or tissues, paper towels)
- a flashlight
- pen and paper
- easy to make meals and drinks (instant noodles, coffee or tea)
Finally, the most important one of all the relocating supplies is the one only you can bring. A positive attitude and strong nerves. Even the best plans tend to go awry, so just take it in stride and relax. As much as it’s possible.
